Minor Arcana
Learn how the four suits connect symbolic images with everyday questions and practical choices.
Four suits, 56 cards
The Minor Arcana consists of Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles in many contemporary decks. Each suit has an Ace, cards Two through Ten, and four court cards. Some traditions use different suit names and illustrations. Check your deck’s booklet before assuming that a description from another system applies directly to your cards.
Use suits as questions
Wands often invite reflection on energy and initiative; Cups on emotion and connection; Swords on thought and tension; Pentacles on resources and daily effort. These associations are starting points. Ask how the visible scene relates to your question rather than assigning a fixed outcome based on the suit alone.
Numbers are useful, not absolute
An Ace can suggest potential, while later numbers may describe developing situations. But the individual picture matters. Court cards can represent roles or qualities as well as people; avoid treating them as proof of a person’s gender, age, or identity. A reading becomes clearer when you explain the connection you are making.
Study a small selection
Start with the Ace of Cups, Two of Swords, and Eight of Pentacles below. They offer different ways to examine emotional openness, a difficult choice, and steady practice. Record observations and possible actions. Revisit them against what actually happened, including details that did not fit your first interpretation.
